Food Around the World

I like trying foods from different countries.   We have some decent restaurants in the Dallas area that serve a wide variety of food.   It is great to meet up with friends to share a meal.

Here I am at a  local Korean restaurant.  I didn't eat all of that.   My friend taking the photo  included hers.

Several months ago (actually September 2017), I went to a Turkish buffet a couple of times.  They have some yummy food but I should stay out of that place.  Buffets can be very dangerous and this one is within a mile of my house.  So tempting, yes? no?  They did have some good eggplant so I should go back.

Before I went to Peru in December 2017, I tried out a local restaurant close to where I live - Cuzco Cuisine.   I have a couple of others to try but I really liked what I had at this restaurant.  I even took a photo of the menu so I could remember what I ordered - Seco de Res.

Seco de Res was good.   Try it!
I think I should try their Lomo Saltado when I go back because that is the dish I kept getting while in Peru.   I'll show a photo of that later on my Peruvian section.

This dessert was supposed to be a typical Peruvian deep fried donut like things . .  OK.  It could have been better.

INTERNATIONAL FOOD ADVENTURES

Sometimes I actually take photos of my food when I travel.   I have decided to post a few from my international travels.  Because we all have to eat and I enjoy good food,

Egypt is the country I have traveled in the most over the years.   I definitely have my favorites.
These are from my latest trip in Feb/March 2017.  It is a selection of restaurant, hotel and homemade . . . The homemade is the best.  I have to thank my lucky stars that I have good friends in Luxor that invited me to come over to eat.

The first item is koshary from a popular restaurant in Luxor that specializes in koshary.  It is a massive carb overload with vermicelli, macaroni, chick peas, lentils which you put hot sauce of your choice on top of all . . .   tasty but not so good for diabetics and people wanting to keep the weight off.

This is one of my lunches when I was staying at Gezira Gardens on the West Bank, Luxor,  I do like falafel and this plate includes an eggplant salad (yummy), some cheese, salad along with the ubiqitous fries.  Egyptians do like fries.  I have seen them put fries on their sandwiches.   Do you see the piece of pita bread that resembles a pac man on the right side?   I had taken a bit before I remembered to take a photo.  :-)

Now for some homemade food.   I am absolutely crazy about the stuffed vegetables . . .mashi! The Egyptians like to stuff the small zucchini squash (courgettes) and grape leaves but you find stuffed peppers and cabbage too.   I think only the cabbage is missing from the first plate.  The other item is mousaka (if I remember correctly)  The second plate included chicken and potatoes plus something I can't remember now.   I ate up these 2 plates of food so fast!  I had spent a long hot day at Karnak Temple complex and shopping for scarabs.  Visiting at the Latif family home was a welcome respite from all the heat.

Then I had some Moroccan food at a restaurant at the Sofitel, Gezirah , Cairo.   I am crazy about zaalouk . . .  eggplant/aubergine/bitingan!!   I had some in Morocco in 2016 and always look for it.  I like eggplant mashed up/chopped in zaalouk, babaganoush and another small salad like dish.  I shouldn't ever forget to mention I love the olives but I liked the ones in Spain the best.  The dish in the second photo is probably a lamb tagine.

Something else you want to try is an Egyptian "pancake" - fteer.   You can get sweet and savoury versions.  In December 2013, we went to a place in Khan el Khalili called   . . .  what else . . . Egyptian Pancakes.   It was yummy!!  We watched the guy who was making them too . . .  dinner and a show.

Sweet!!  Honey, bananas, chocolate  . . .  good stuff

You can see Egyptian Pancakes peeking out through all the other objects in the way. You sit at tables that are basically in the street but the street is closed to cars.

Morocco has some good food too,   I am always joking about wanting all the olives.   You see these big displays of olives in the market.  Hard to resist.   This was from my trip in April 2016.

I went to Croatia in June 2017.  Spent most of my time in the islands (Mali Losjin) so have lots of photos of beautiful water, skies and boats. Also spent a few days in Zagreb before and after the trek down to the islands. I did have some good food while there.

The following 2 photos are from the last night in Zagreb.  A salad with tomatoes, cheese, buckwheat and cabbage (?cabbage?) plus a main of turkey rolled with bacon and plums in a plum sauce.  Interesting.

But wait!!   I had other food experiences . .   I confess that I also ate Pizza and really good beef salad in Zagreb.  :-)

Cold vegetable salad with cheese that I had at the Palace Hotel the first day I arrived in Zagreb,

A fish lunch served on board the boat which was taking us around the Croatian Islands for a day tour.

I tossed about half of my fish out to the seagulls.

The ubiquitous ice cream drink served everywhere.

Some breakfast at the apartment where I stayed.

Yes, another pizza in Croatia,  This was in Osor.  We had a walk around this historic old town before eating.

Dinner at a very popular place in a town that I can't remember its name.  The location indicator on the photo on my phone says Loznati, but that doesn't sound right.  I ordered lamb and a tomato salad.   You might notice that my tomato salad is tomatoes only.  At least it was something other than meat and potatoes.

Speaking of olives, I have decided I must go back to Madrid, Spain just to eat olives.   Look at these yummy olives I bought at the olive bar in the San Miguel Mercado.  I even ate the garlic cloves. I do love garlic too!!!  Funny, I have no other photos of food in Madrid except for a sandwich I got at the airport on departure.  How odd!
