When I visited my doctor back in August, I was telling her (as usual it seems) about how stress impacts me. I mentioned that I had finally decided to quit driving on LBJ/635 during rush hour because it just made things worse. The construction project that is years away from being finished and the heat had all added to the quintupling of the number of crazies. Driving has always been a stress inducing activity for me. Dancing while driving didn't seem to help as you really need to concentrate when there is such heavy traffic, etc. My next best thing to do was drive some of my alternate routes with the addition of the stop lights and school zones (now that school has started). There are still some crazies out there too . . . is Texas the only place that has 3-lanes on each side of the median for most major streets?? But it helps to at least get rid of the huge major clog ups with idiots trying to 80mph by switching lanes constantly . . . not that you don't have said idiots on the side streets.
Soooooooooo, my doctor mentioned that she has decided to just drive the speed limit. Good for her. My experience has been that NO ONE in this town drives the speed limit and are more likely to run over you than look at you. But I thought about it for awhile and realized that I was not even adhering to my 10mph over the speed limit rule, which I had used before I started to become Speedy Gonzalez. Now I have started to concentrate a bit more on 5mph over the limit . . . or between 5-10 mph depending on what is going on. lol, wouldn't you know that when I first started doing this, I was stopped by a cop for doing 47mph in a 35mph zone (this was one of the speed trap areas that went from Dallas to Farmers Branch for a few blocks then in to Irving . . . the speed limits changed from 35mph to 40mph to 35mph to 40mph within a few blocks . . . and the cop asked me "do you know how fast you were driving?". Uh, no??? I didn't get I ticket I suspect because I have a clean record (last time I was stopped was probably 5 years ago and I did a defensive driving class to clear that ticket). When I told him I was trying to slow down, he said "Try harder".
I am still trying to slow down and trying not to get all agitated by the people passing me like maniacs. And praying that some idiot doesn't decide to ram me because I am actually driving a decent speed. One thing I have noticed over the years is the faster speeds can make you get more stressed out. I found that on long drives, I felt much better with the speed at 60mph that 80mph . . . even with a car that is very comfortable to sit in for long hours. But I guess those days are long gone with all the 70-75mph speed limits on Texas highways. And what about that new toll road that is going to have an 85mph speed limit?? I am sure that some people are just raring to get on there and quite willing to pay for the privilege. I hope a lot of them do . . . and leave the regular highway for people that don't was to have those wolves always bearing down on their rear-ends.
ahhhhhhhh, so if I drive a slower speed I also can listen to relaxing music and do some "car dancing" :-)
